Debbie Crisman lost her son, Daniel, in
the attacks on the Twin Towers. And she's the leading force behind the
memorial project. Just off Ridge Road in South Montrose, you'll find this
surreal memorial, honoring those who died September 11th.
"I think because I've been given so much,
I feel the need to give back," Debbie said. "The community is very generous.
The community gives a lot."
Her son Daniel was killed in the North
Tower. He had just started working on the 97th floor at an import/export
business five days before the attacks. He was 25.
"Anyone who knew him instantly was drawn
to him," Debbie said. "He just soaked you into his heart and soul."
Scroll down the names, and you'll come
to Daniel Crisman. His name is also on a special memorial a few yards away.
Debbie built that in 2002, but she wanted a site that honored everyone.
So, 18 months ago work started on Spirit
of Nine-Eleven, Enduring Freedom. The stones are set to resemble the Pentagon.
On each, are the names of those who died in the terrorist attacks, in alphatetical
order by first name. There's also two squares for the Twin Towers. And
soon, a star for the field in Pennsylvania.
"I was looking for a place to escape,
just be alone, and you can have several hours here just cutting grass,
sitting, it's quiet and relaxing," she said. "It feels good to do something
in memory of him."
The memorial was dedicated at 6:15 p.m.
Saturday, just off Ridge Road in South Montrose.
